Submit an Article

We would appreciate any articles / tutorials you may write for our site. We will pay R300 (ZAR)  per article or tutorial that gets published. Please read through and adhere to the following pointers before you submit an article:

 

General:

  • Articles should be concise and have a clear goal (to teach other photographer’s a specific technique. For example, how to create an HDR photo)
  • Tutorials should be supported by sufficient visual elements i.e. photographs, screen casts etc. In other words, provide examples
  • All text, images, videos, screen casts, or whichever material you use; should be your own or at least have permission to use it. In case you use any material from another source please adhere the following:
  • Get written consent of the author(s). An email stating which material(s) you may use will be fine
  • Indicate the original author’s / photographers’ name(s) and website address

 

Articles related to Photography Techniques:

  • Which gear you have used (I.e. Canon 5D MII, Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 APO EX lens, Polarizing filter, Tripod, On camera flash, Speed lights, Studio flash etc.)
  • Program Used (i.e. Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, Manual, Program AE, Automatic etc.)
  • Settings: ISO (i.e. ISO 100), Shutter Speed (i.e. 1/200th/sec), Aperture (i.e. f/5.6), Meter Mode (i.e. matrix, evaluative, partial, spot, centre weighted etc)
  • Where applicable please supply additional information for example how you took the image (with a tripod, lying on the ground, shooting from the top to prevent clutter in the shot, I ran 250 meters after the man and asked him to take his portrait…). Also don’t hesitate to say why you felt it is a good shot and where you think you could have improved on the shot)
  • Mention specifically the conditions / ambient light. (i.e. Overcast, scorching sun, heavy yellow cast due to surrounding tungsten lights,  etc.)
  • Schematics, photos or videos of your setup is always welcome.

 

Articles related to Post Processing:

  • Indicate which software you have used (i.e. Lightroom, Photoshop CS 3, Photomatix Pro v3.1 etc)
  • Tutorials should follow a step-for-step approach, a logical breakdown of steps and preferably with visual aids such as saved screen shots.
  • Steps should be numbered and always try to follow a one step – one image approach (avoid having one image that explain several steps)
  • Not less than 12 steps to ensure adequate depth.
  • Indicate if you have used third-party filters / plug-ins. As far as possible, provide web links to plug-in sites.

 

Form and Layout of Articles & Tutorials:

All articles should be provided in text format, preferably MS Word

 

Tell us about yourself:

  • Articles and Videos should start with an introduction of yourself i.e. Name & Surname, Age, and maybe just a brief description of your full time job.
  • Write about your experience and accolades (i.e. amateur with about 3 year’s experience, photo competitions that you have won, etc)
  • Provide your email address & website where applicable

 

Heading:

  • Heading or subject should be clear and concise (“Taking of a  family portrait”, “How to get a really shallow depth of field”, “Create stunning mono shots by using LAB in Photoshop”, “How to get the most out of RAW by using Lightroom”, etc.)

 

Content:

  • Content should be concise and steps should be numbered with lengthy tutorials.
  • Written tutorials around 500 words
  • Videos / Screen casts around 10 minutes in length

 

Example images:

  • Paste example photos directly into the document and attach the saved images within a single folder
  • Example image should be posted directly beneath the relevant portion and captioned.
  • Photos should not have borders, watermarks or really large copyright notices.
  • Attached images should be saved no larger than 1024 pixels by 120 dpi and in Jpeg format.

  • Take note that we reserve the right to which articles will be published and that we are under no obligation to publish an article you have submitted. If we decide to use your article for publication we will contact you.  We may take several months before we may publish an article you wrote; we may for example, wait to use your tutorial as part of a specific series. Please do not contact us in order to find out if your article will indeed be published if you did not yet get any reply from us.
